Located in the city center of Zanzibar, Zanzibar Shipping Corporation is entirely owned by the government and started with a paid-up capital of TZS 82.912 million. It has been in the shipping business for over forty years. The corporation was formed to specifically serve the sea mobility needs of the people and goods between the islands of Unguja and Pemba, as well as between the islands and other ports in East and Eastern Africa. Its main goal is to become a leading operator of sea transportation services in the Eastern and Southern Africa regions.
SHIPCO offers a wide range of services in the shipping industry. As its name indicates, it provides sea transportation services for passengers and cargo. It also offers agency services to local and foreign vessels calling at Zanzibar.

SHIPCO has recently purchased a new modern product tanker, MT Ukombozi II to replace the old-fashioned MT Ukombozi. MT Ukombozi II is a modern double hull ship having capacity of carrying up to 3,500 tons of petroleum products. The ship has 86.21 meters long, 14 meters wide and four holds (eight tanks) of fuel.
